This conference will concentrate on the variety of teacher training models being used in various countries where English is taught as a second language. How does the increased importance of English as a second language affect the kind of materials that teachers should be trained to use? If interest in learning English is shifting from learning primarily because of interest in the United States to the practical need to develop competence for the purpose of international communication, what are the implications for materials, teaching methods and the training of teachers? These and related questions will be pursued through presentations and discussion. Participation is limited to 40 persons. The keynote speakers are Donald Byrd, Sherry Fetzer, and Joy Reid.
The movies shown as an evening activity in this workshop are Driving Miss Daisy and Mississippi Masala. A paper containing ideas on using film in the classroom is available, and includes questions and answers about movie production as well as.
