Postmodernism: The Enlightenment Continued

The term postmodernism has been used in any number of ways and has given rise to epic confusions. This lecture will try to create distinctions in the various levels of abstraction at which the term has been applied and will then focus on postmodernism as the most appropriate label for a new, post-1960s, socio-cultural formation that partially redefines modernity.

Plenary Presentation –Emory Elliott

Postmodernity and Cultural Diversity in the Contemporary U.S.A.

Since 1960, the United States has been undergoing a social, political and cultural revolution that is transforming the composition of the population in many ways, both visible and invisible. The visible changes include the new ethnic and gender diversity of many institutions such as in the elite universities and in many professions such as law and medicine. The less obvious shifts are occurring in what people read and study, what subjects are included in popular cultural forms, and how citizens perceive issues projected and debates in the public forum. The lecture will explore some of these developments and the possible links among them.

0900-1000 Plenary Presentation: East Comes West: America’s New Immigrants – New Lives, New Texts - Brigitte Scheer

There is a wealth of literature now being written by the "new immigrants", those who have come to North America in the past twenty or thirty years. They are more likely to have traversed the Pacific than the Atlantic and have different characteristics (cultures, languages, personal histories, religious beliefs etc.) than their mostly European predecessors. This lecture will examine some literary reflections of the contemporary immigrant experience, studying writers of Chinese, Japanese, and Indian descent, among others.
