American Studies Journals

American Quarterly

This journal was founded in 1949, and is published by the American Studies Association. "The journal promotes a broad humanistic understanding of American culture and encourages cross disciplinary work." For Example: "Ethnicity, Literary Theory and the Grounds of Resistance" by Betsy Erkkila.

Journal of American Studies

Published by the British Association of American Studies since 1955. ". . .publishes work by scholars of any nationality on American literature, art, history, music, film, popular culture, institutions, politics, economics, geography and related subjects."

American Studies International

Published since 1962. All articles are written by scholars outside the United States.

Appalachian Journal: A Regional Studies Review

Published by the Center for Appalachian Studies. Includes news, essays, poetry and interviews about the Appalachian region in the southern United States.

Boundary 2

We have one issue: Jazz as a Cultural archive. Contains interviews and articles about jazz.

Journal of Popular Culture

Published by the Popular Culture Association. Articles offering diverse perspectives on popular culture. Such as: " Jewish Humor, Self Hatred or Anti-Semitism: The Sociology of Hanukkah Cards in America." by Nancy Jo Silberman-Federman

Prospects: An Annual of American Cultural Studies

Published by the Cambridge University Press. "Prospects is a multi-disciplinary journal that explores all aspects of American civilization."

Published by Sage Periodicals press. Articles concerning the American political elite and it's policies. Such as: "Career Advancement and Subcommittee Chairs in the U.S. House of Representative." by Christopher J. Deering

Presidential Studies Quarterly

Published by the Center for the Study of the Presidency. Articles about the presidency, such as: "The Making of Mr. Bush's War: A Failure to Learn From History?" by John S. Watt.


American History Journals

The American Historical Review

Published by the American Historical Association. Contains Articles and reviews on a variety of historical topics. Such as: "Baron's Machiavelli and Renaissance Republicanism" by John M. Najemy.

The Journal of American History

Published by the Organization of American Historians. This Journal contains articles and reviews exclusively about American history. Such as: "Substituting Law for the Lash: Emancipation and Legal Formalism in a Mississippi County Court.

The Journal of Economic History

Published by the Cambridge University Press. "The Journal of Economic History seeks to promote the Scholarly study of Economic aspects of the human past from a diversity of perspectives, notably those of Economists and Historians.

American Literary History

Published by the Oxford University Press. Articles and reviews from literary scholars and cultural critics on American literature. Such as "Writing in the Dark" :The Political Fictions of American Travel Writing" by David E. Johnson.

Journal of Southern History

Published by the Southern Historical Association. This journal contains reviews and articles on the history of the southern United States. Such as: "Legacy of Rage: George Wallace and the Transformation of American Politics" by Dan T. Carter

The William and Mary Quarterly: Magazine of Early American History and Culture

Published by the Institute of Early American History and Culture. Contains articles such as: "Dueling as Politics: Reinterpreting the Burr-Hamilton Duel" by Joanne B. Freeman

The American Economic Review

Published by the American Economic Association. Articles mainly concerned with current economic issues, such as: "Corporate-Debt Overhang and Macro-Economic Expectations" by Owen Lamont.

The American Journal of Economics and Sociology

The Journal of Economic Perspectives

American Indian Quarterly

Winterthur Portfolio: A Journal of American Material Culture

The Antioch Review

Published by Antioch College. This is a journal of fiction and poetry. Also includes some book reviews and editorials.

The Yale Review

Contains articles, fiction, poetry and reviews on a variety of subjects. Articles include, "Two Writers' Beginnings" by Richard H. Brodhead

American Journal of Education

Computer-Assisted English Language Learning Journal

Primary focus is the use of computers in English as a Second/Foreign Language settings. Articles are also of interest to those using computers in foreign languages and adult literacy.

Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly

Published by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Articles are divided into three categories: "Images and News", "Newspaper Organization and Professional Roles", and "Theory and Content."

The Journal of Social Psychology
